Design collaboration: Studio Henry Wilson

Design and collaboration sits at the very foundation of our identity.  We value quality and unobtrusive design that fulfils an imperative function, design that is restrained and long-lasting.

As such, we seek to collaborate with like-minded designers and artisans right down to the simplest of items.

This month we introduce you to the Prise Bronze Bottle Opener – a highly sculptural and bold take on a utilitarian essential. An object intended to be seen, appreciated and used frequently rather than hidden in a drawer.

Designed by Studio Henry Wilson and forged using time-honoured techniques, Prise was designed in collaboration with The Calile to provide guests with a small moment of design that possesses both functionality and beauty.

While most will think of bright brick archways and cool, green-tiled pool when thinking of ‘The Calile’ – we think it’s the small details that really frame a place, that make it clear that someone has considered every moment of your stay.  Glass carafes in room for ice cold filtered water refills on every floor, soft pebbled leather day-beds for soft naps and yes, even a tactile, weighty bottle opener for prising open a bottle of something cool and bubbly.

Hand forged in Sydney and found atop our in-room credenzas, Prise strikes a highly sculptural form, with the tactile and robust bronze materiality hinting at its tool-like utility.

“With an emphatically sculptural design and rich, tactile finish, the Prise Bronze Bottle Opener embodies a mid- century aesthetic, the practicality of traditional tools, and the signature of a changeless, exacting production process, “says Henry Wilson.

“My work is characterised in part by utilitarianism, giving precedence to form and function. However, the embodiment of feeling is also important to me; I’m interested in the imperfect beauty that comes from objects made by hand, and in the creation of pieces that retain a sense of individual charm while not compromising the robust framework required for manufacture”.

Each Prise is manufactured by a small-scale art foundry in Sydney, using the centuries-old technique of lost-wax casting, with the bronze sealed in restoration wax to facilitate a rich, dark, tarnish-resistant surface. The time-consuming finishing process replicates that used by sculpture greats such as the English artist Henry Moore, renowned for his monumental post-war bronze works.

“Further, it matters that the work endures; well-made things last, and I see longevity as one of the simpler forms of sustainability we can hope to achieve as contemporary designers.”

It is this ethos that has seen Wilson foster long-term collaborations with select, like-minded suppliers and manufacturers, and now with us here at The Calile.

Prise is ready to be put to work ‘prising’ a bottle of something special in-room. Use and enjoy – and if you like it as much as we do, purchase from our lobby shop, M.O.S.T.
