3rd Space is The Calile’s Stay with Purpose partner in October and November. Here’s what your stay supports.
There are things most of us don’t think twice about. A hot shower. A meal, most days, at the same table. Someone who remembers our name.
For someone sleeping rough, or holding onto housing by a thread, none of that is guaranteed.
But at 3rd Space, these things are non-negotiable – no matter who you are or what you’re going through. It’s a place where people can come out of the weather, have a meal, do some washing, rest safely and connect without judgement.
That idea – small act of care, repeated – is the premise of Stay with Purpose. For every room, every night at The Calile, $5 is donated to an organisation creating meaningful change. Right now that support – your contribution – goes to 3rd Space.
The local daytime drop-in centre was established in 1975 as a grassroots response to visible homelessness in inner-city Brisbane by community members, people sleeping rough and students who saw that people needed somewhere safe and welcoming to go during the day.
Though its purpose – to make sure no-one feels invisible – may sound simple, the difference 3rd Space makes to the 150+ people who walk through its doors every day is anything but.
Today, those open doors help people navigate everything from healthcare and housing to ID and employment – practical, often complicated things, made a little easier by starting with safety, dignity, and ordinary care.
“Most of the time we build trust in small ways,” says Ian Kemish, Chair of the Board at 3rd Space.
“Every contribution helps someone take their next step. All of it becomes part of a chain of care, reaching into the everyday life of this centre.”
By staying with us in October and November, you become part of that chain of care, too.
“What I love about 3rd Space is the humanity of what they do,” says Catherine Malouf, co-owner of The Calile.
“A meal, a shower, somewhere safe to sit or someone who knows your name may sound like small things, but when life has become incredibly difficult, dignity often begins with exactly those things. As we look after our guests, we believe that everyone deserves care and hospitality, especially when life has presented hardship and challenges that make these simple needs difficult to sustain.”

Every time you stay at The Calile, you leave something behind. Usually, it’s a phone charger or a forgotten pair of earphones. Through Stay with Purpose, it’s something a little more meaningful. For every night stayed at The Calile, $5 is donated to a nominated community partner. Small contributions, repeated over time, come together to support the people and organisations making our community stronger.
