CALILE CULTURE, AN EVENING WITH BEN QUILTY in collaboration with Jan Murphy Gallery

The Calile is delighted to present an evening with celebrated Australian Artist Ben Quilty in conversation with the National Gallery of Australia’s Director Nick Mitzevich.

Famous, and some may say infamous, for not shying away from harsh truths, for tackling difficult topics head on, for championing the marginalised and putting issues on display unflinchingly, Quilty’s reputation precedes him.  But, like all good observers of the world, Quilty appreciates dichotomy – in as much as he is known for the exploration of dark topics, equally he embraces playfulness, whimsy, childhood dreams and blurred realities.

Recognised for creating artworks saturated with emotion – Quilty reveals his fierce moral commitment and empathy to the world with every brushstroke.  Artworks that challenge, that entertain, that move us – whether it be by laying vulnerability bare or through the subtle use of humour.

Violence, budgies, skulls, guts, eyeballs, toddler tantrums, Rorschach’s, masculinity, portraits of compelling individuals, self-portraits, these are familiar icons in Quilty’s work.  There is a thread however, the hidden psychologies of people and places, connections to the land and untouchable, buried truths

The upcoming ‘Ben Quilty: 20 Years’ solo exhibition at Jan Murphy Gallery delves into the recesses of Quilty’s private collection – with the artist curating an exhibition that is both highly personal and spotlights significant moments in his ever-changing creative process.

The collection of works is a reflection of Quilty, deeply personal and raw, intimate portraits of himself, his family and his friends while also mapping out the artist’s far-ranging interests and journey beyond Australia, from New York, Afghanistan and Lebanon, to Lesbos, Serbia and Bali.

Secure your tickets here to celebrate an evening of dining and compelling conversation delving into the past 20 year’s of Quilty’s oeuvre. The exhibition opens at Jan Murphy Gallery on 19 November until 7 December 2024 and features key works from 2000 – 2020 from Ben’s studio and private collection.
