May Book Club: You Are Here

We’re taking a hike with our May Book Club in the loveliest way.  You Are Here by David Nicholls, is a novel of first encounters, second chances and finding the way home.  A beautiful and compelling read about two characters who meet on a coast-to-coast walk in the UK.

Longlisted for the Booker Prize for his novel Us, Nicholls is perhaps best known for his international best seller novel One Day, which has recently been adapted into a critically acclaimed Netflix series.

Nicholls has a gift for conversation, and building characters and a beautiful intimacy through tender interactions that are believable, funny, mundane and moving. This ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary and to convert everyday conversations into something poetic and meaningful is presented effortlessly in every word of this novel.

You Are Here has a journey at its core, with two lonely protagonists brought together on a hike across the Cumbrian landscape. The English countryside is painted in glorious colour by Nicholls, and readers able to navigate the journey via the maps included in the book, readers will be able to fully immerse themselves in the novel.

This is a love story, but it is never predictable – it is warm, hopeful, fragile, generous and incredibly funny. A gentle and exquisite tale of two souls, who unexpectedly find comfort in each other’s company while doing the at times mundane activity of walking.

Full of hope about people and love, You Are Here reminds us of the beauty, rawness and power of human emotions and is filled with joy and heartache and all the things that make being alive so precious.

This is a cosy and feel-good novel that is quite simply, the perfect holiday read, so while you are here, read You Are Here.
