Summer Residency: Perimeter Books

The Calile is excited to partner with Perimeter Books to deliver a Summer Residency.  One of Australia’s leading specialist bookstores, publishers and distribution houses will bring an editorial edit of summer reading to our Library for guests to enjoy as part of our ongoing commitment to literary and cultural programming.

The Melbourne-based multi-hyphenate, Perimeter Books will take up reading residency in The Calile from November with a highly curated selection of independent titles, editions and zines designed specifically to provide guests with exclusive, enlightening and enlivening reads. Providing a broad and unique non-fiction reading list spanning photography, art, theory, design and architecture for guests to enjoy in addition to our continuing Calile Book Club.

While The Calile Book Club transports us to fictional places through the vision of the featured authors, the Perimeter Summer Residency takes us on a creative tour of our world through conceptually driven publishing that presents work by those with unique perspectives and specialisations. Those not bound by plotlines and character development, but rather focussed on thoughtfully designed, high-quality and occasionally experimental books that push the boundaries of printed form.

The Perimeter Summer Residency conducts a guided tour through the vision of the artists, photographers, philosophers, ramblers, scholars, potterers, theorists, thinkers, studiers, poets, academics, curators, speculators and savants – real people doing, analysing, creating and amalgamating beautiful, simple, complex and sensitive things.

From Strangers need strange moments together, by Mouna Andraos and Melissa Mongiat which examines how interactive art and storytelling experiences in public spaces can create joy and moments of connection and care between strangers. How performance, and placemaking can be used to build a new infrastructure for the human spirit.

To Martino Gamper’s Before, After & Beyond, which navigates the furniture designer’s depth via a comprehensive and charming compilation of chairs, tables, ‘Chables’, cabinets, screens, shelves, mirrors, vases, beds, desks, lights, hooks, books and more. Most well-known for his iconic 100 Charis in 100 Days project, this print retrospective brings together the different aspects of his design practice, highlighting his craftsmanship and use of design to create interaction.

Perimeter Books was founded in 2011 by Dan Rule and Justine Ellis and specialises in selective range of independently published titles.  Beyond being a fierce champion of print, Perimeter also has an award-winning publishing imprint Perimeter Editions.  As a publisher, they champion creative people and projects – publishing autonomous books in close collaboration with photographers, artists, curators and writers.  Producing publications that exhibit a criticality and sensitivity to content and form.

Cementing their dedication to print, Perimeter also curates an active program of exhibitions, talks, launches, workshops and consultations all designed to bring people together with print. They co-present Same Page Art Book Fair with Gertrude Contemporary in Melbourne, Volume: Another Art Book Fair with Printed Matter Inc. in New York and Artspace, in Sydney.

We are beyond delighted to partner with Perimeter to deliver a Summer Residency of reading, and hope that our guests will take the time to enjoy the careful curation available in the library from November.
