Some of the most enduring connections exist beyond language – music among them. Its rhythms gather people, reminding us of our common ground and the threads that bind generations together. This November, The Calile is honoured to host a live performance by the Queensland Youth Orchestras (QYO) Big Band, presented as part of our 2025 Stay & Donate program.
Comprised of 19 outstanding young musicians, the QYO Big Band represents the next generation of Queensland’s musical talent. Under the direction of conductor Bohdan Davison, these emerging artists, aged between 15 and 25, will fill The Calile with the vibrant energy of swing and soul before embarking on its first international tour to Japan – performing across Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto in a two-week celebration of music and cultural exchange.
Founded in 1966 by the conductor and educator John Curro AM MBE, QYO has, over nearly six decades, evolved into a cornerstone of Queensland’s cultural life – a place where creativity and discipline collide. Many of its alumni now perform on global stages, carrying with them the legacy of a program built on community and excellence.
The Big Band’s upcoming tour marks an important milestone in that legacy, with all proceeds from the event directly supporting the program and ensuring every musician can take part in this formative journey. Guests are invited to enjoy a night of performance and connection – where the joy of music becomes an act of generosity.
The Calile’s Stay & Donate initiative began with a simple idea: that a hotel could do more than host – it could contribute. And what started as nightly donations to local causes has become an ongoing way for The Calile to support the people and organisations shaping its wider community. This performance extends that gesture beyond the guest room, turning an evening of sound and celebration into tangible support for Queensland’s cultural future.
Join us to experience firsthand the passion and promise of the Queensland Youth Orchestras Big Band before it takes its sound to the world. If you are unable to attend, we invite you to donate in support of this important initiative.
