There’s a certain pleasure in choosing one album and staying with it. No skipping. No jumping between moods. Just placing the needle down and letting an album unfold the way it was arranged.
Long Playing brings that style of listening into the present, inviting you to spend time with one album from our own record collection. Wander up to the Library on Level One, drop the needle, and settle in. If you’re not here in person, each Long Playing edition is available to stream.
The monthly selection comes from our Music Director, Darren Sommerville, the quiet force behind how The Calile sounds. He considers the architecture, the time of day, and the natural energy of each space, choosing music that meets the moment, sometimes subtly, sometimes with charge, but always with intention.
Long Playing offers a way to experience that same intention for yourself. One album, uninterrupted, offering a simple way to sit back and let the music take the lead.
Volume one features Loved by Parcels. Their gentle grooves already shape some of the hotel’s most iconic moments, like golden hour by the pool, or dusk settling over the Lobby Bar. It radiates coastal optimism without falling into cliché, and leaves its mark with tight vocal harmonies, soft-focus funk, and warm analog textures. It’s meticulously crafted, without demanding attention — a sentiment we like to live by.
Listening Notes
– Tight vocal harmonies give the album its lift. You can almost picture the band huddled around the mic.
– A relaxed, sun-soaked confidence; nothing tries too hard, and that’s the charm.
– Live instruments take the lead, giving each track a warm, human texture that feels good at any hour.
– Funk and electropop rhythms keep things energised, while the lyrics rest in a quieter, more reflective place.
– Best played as intended: start to finish.
