Calile Culture, Curating ‘Iris Van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses’

From literature, theatre, dance and arts – to date, Calile Culture has explored the many facets of creative expression. This June, fashion will be added to the cultural consommé.

The Calile is delighted to present a discussion about Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses prior to the exhibition opening.

Nina Miall, Curator, International Art (QAGOMA), will appear in conversation with Edwina McCann, Editorial Director and Publisher News Prestige and Conde Nast titles Australia, to discuss this major exhibition celebrating the work of internationally acclaimed Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen direct from the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD) in Paris.

Miall will unpack the story of the exhibition which includes close to 100 haute couture garments, contemporary artworks, soundscapes by artist Salvador Breed, natural history specimens and cultural artefacts from which the designer draws inspiration. Miall will also discuss how a Brisbane art institution goes about re-creating an evocation of the designer’s Amsterdam studio, revealing the stages of a dress in development, and a space dedicated to van Herpen’s fashion shows.

Iris van Herpen’s innovative creations, are exactly that and more – they sit outside of the usual framework of fashion.  The sculptural silhouettes are ethereal and fluid, created by hand and often using cutting-edge technology.

Leaning more towards art than fashion, van Herpen’s designs have graced the shoulders of some of the most powerfully creative women of our time, including Beyonce, Björk, Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga and Tilda Swinton.

We are excited to present this conversation and invite you to join the discussion.

Tickets are free however registration is essential. Register here.

About: Iris Van Herpen

Born in 1984, Iris van Herpen grew up in the village of Wamel, The Netherlands, in harmony with nature and the living world. Nature, along with classical dance which she practiced intensively from an early age, are the founding elements of her relationship to the body.

After a formative period working with Alexander McQueen and Claudy Jongstra, van Herpen founded the Maison Iris van Herpen in Amsterdam in 2007. She has built an international reputation for combining the subtleties of craftsmanship with the pioneering spirit of innovation.

In 2010, van Herpen joined the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris and the following year she presented her first 3D-printed dress from the Crystallization Collection, currently conserved by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
