Hot in the city

Leisure (noun): time when one is not occupied – free time.

When you are not occupied by the pool, day spa, strolling our surroundings or sitting with a sip watching the world go by, there is more to our city than meets the eye.

Those artistically aware will be inspired by ‘Air’ the latest exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) showcasing more than 30 noteworthy Australian and international artists. Described as ethereal and invisible ‘Air’ invites viewers to reflect and consider the shared atmosphere and its future.

So too, at the neighbouring Queensland Museum, State Library and Queensland Art Gallery where rotating schedules and permanent collections can be enjoyed year-round.

Just across the river situated in City Hall is the Museum of Brisbane fondly known as MOB. For more views of Brisbane enjoy their current exhibition ‘Making Place’ featuring 100 works depicting varying aspects of our city by renowned artists Judy Watson, Sam Fullbrook and Margaret Olley to name a few. While you are there book a Clock Tower tour – a rite of passage for every Brisbane local. Ride to the tower in one of the city’s oldest working cage lifts and enjoy a 360-degree view of the city all from inside Australia’s largest analogue clock.

If viewing or playing sport is favoured, Brisbane is home to cricket and golf in summer. Catch the Twenty20 Big Bash League at the Gabba or tee up at Brookwater Golf and Country Club. A championship course designed by Greg Norman and worth the 30-minute drive from James St – if you hit well.

Those musically minded will be satisfied with a calendar of gigs at the Fortitude Music Hall, Triffid and Tivoli, while Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) and Brisbane Powerhouse promise to entertain with musicals (hi HAMILTON), ballet and comedy acts all summer long. Pro tip: Brisbane Powerhouse is a short 2km bike ride from The Calile – borrow a bike and hit the pavement.

For a ‘Swayze and Moore’ moment, Mas & Meik Ceramic House offers hand building, wheel, and glazing workshops. The light-filled industrial studio with high ceilings, lush greenery and all the gear is ideal for those with no idea.

Back on James St an award-winning restaurant and wine shop Cru Bar + Cellar host regular wine tastings. Pull up a pew and settle in to taste a tipple or two. If you like what you taste, take it back to your room, this is free time after all.

For assistance in curating your next stay, or if any of the above is of interest our Guest Services team is available 24/7 to assist here.
