Calile Culture: Australian Chamber Orchestra, Moving Mountains

Music is an intrinsic part of filmic storytelling, with emotive nuance entrusted to film scores long before dialogue entered the scene.  It is fitting then that in celebration of their 50th anniversary, the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), is revisiting one of the orchestra’s most moving and bold explorations of film and music, Mountain.

The Calile is honoured to host Calile Culture’s first foray into the world of music with an intimate preview performance of Mountain, taking us on a journey to the world’s highest summits with excerpts from the award-winning film accompanied by a live score performed by Richard Tognetti AO (Artistic Director and Lead Violin) and ACO string quartet.

Described by The Guardian as, “A sublime rush of adrenaline and orchestral beauty,” Mountain pushes the creative possibilities of each medium – marrying dramatic visual landscapes and equally powerful soundscapes.  It is, however, the combined effect of film and live performance, that elevates Mountain to the heavens.

With a score arranged by Tognetti, Direction by BAFTA-nominated Jennifer Peedom, script by celebrated landscape author Robert Macfarlane and narration by award-winning actor Willem Dafoe, Mountain unites creative disciplines to provide an immersive and emotive film. Tognetti ensures that music is an equal participant in the cinematic experience, deploying the score with powerful effect to embody the serenity, magnitude and terror of these jaw-dropping landscapes.

Following the performance, Tognetti will be joined in conversation and Q&A with Australian Financial Review Magazine Editor, Matthew Drummond, to excavate the collaborative process. How one sets about scaling the ‘creative mountain’ to create compelling work that captures not only the grandeur of the gruelling and at times foreboding ranges, but also honours the heroes  that summit  them.

Join us to ascend the musical heights and tour the world’s most formidable summits from the comfort of The Calile, with champagne, conversation and live performance by one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras and declared National Trust ‘National Treasure’ Richard Tognetti.
