The inaugural Calile Culture will launch on Monday 18 September, with The Calile honoured to welcome Australian Author Anna Funder.
The Miles Franklin Prize winner will join us to discuss her internationally acclaimed new work Wifedom, in conversation with Griffith Review Editor, Carody Culver.
Presented in partnership with local institution Riverbend Books, Funder will join The Calile for her only Brisbane appearance.
A biography, memoir and treatise, Wifedom the story of George Orwell’s first wife, Eileen O’Shaughnessy, has been described as “simply a masterpiece” by Geraldine Brooks AO, and “an utter triumph” by Anne Summers.
Funder meticulously pieces together O’Shaughnessy’s story and exposes the tricks that left her story buried – by the biographers, and by history. Drawing from O’Shaughnessy’s own words she recreates Orwell’s marriage in an intimate, inventive counter-fiction to the visionary writer and his invisible wife.
